Second Thoughts
I’m having second thoughts about "The Year." The original idea was a dark comedy. Lately the idea has drifted into a sullen, introspective drama. I think because I can’t see how to make Price’s encounter with people he interacts with build up tension through ever increasing humorous conflict. I like the Olympia community theater setting. But the story needs escalating conflict. Like Price’s return sets-off a chain reaction of events similar to a modern day lynch mob for a reason that’s not completely clear. Perhaps everyone he runs into has some little bone to pick, but the synergy of all the little things escalates scene by scene getting worse and worse. Perhaps he keeps bumping into women, all of whom hate him for one reason or another, jilted lovers most likely. They become this mob who starts following him from place to place, eventually chasing him off the WC stage, down to Percival Landing where he’s cornered. Then Alice rescues him. Hmm. Okay, this is good. Need to give this some more thought.
